MosEL : Just Thinking Out Loud

Can you introduce yourself and tell a little bit about your background?

Peace world, my name is MosEL. I am a 21 year old artist (rapper/producer/musician) from Detroit Michigan. I've been making music since I was around 8 years old. Rather it be from playing an instrument to singing to djing. I'm really just in love with music. My life revolves around it. I am currently in college and I skip class to make beats and pass on dates with pretty women to write songs (laugh).

What does your pseudonym mean? Why did you choose the stage name MosEL?
My mom and dad gave me the name Girrard Alfonse Tennille back in 1988. Since I have been rapping pretty much all my life I have been through a bunch of silly "stage" names. I think around my last year of high school God gave me the name MosEL, when pronounced correctly I think it sounds pretty cool. The story behind the name has to do with the Biblical character Moses and a bunch of other stuff not really exciting to read in an interview, I won't bore you.

How would you describe your productions? When did you start producing beats? Who influences you?
I can't really describe it. I just know the music sounds great! I probably made my first beat when I was like 6 on a Casio keyboard or something. I started making the kind of stuff I make now a few years ago though. Musically I am influenced most by people who do not make music. I am influenced by real life, love, hate, history, current events and definitely relationships. But on the level of fellow producers that influence me of course J Dilla, my brother Quelle, one of my best friends Soulful from Virginia, I like a lot of people and listen to a lot of stuff from Gentle Giant to Elliot Smith to Black Milk to Georgia Anne Muldrow to obscure Afro-Cuban jazz so its hard to pinpoint direct influences. I guess simply put everything I've ever heard influences my production and I've heard a lot of music.

Your lyrics are very soulfoul, where do you find inspiration? Is there any message you wanna send by your music?
My lyrics probably seem soulful to you because the music is very genuine. Every word on that album I have lived so it is all coming from the soul. I am inspired by everything my life and relationships have offered me in addition to pulling from history and my ancestors experiences, as well as future events that yall don't even know is about to happen. There really is no general message I am trying to convey with my music it is up to the listener to pick and pull what they want from each song because my music is stuffed with messages.

Who are your favourite artists?
My favorite artist are Stevie Wonder and Nas, but I really like Mos Def's last album, everything Slum Village has ever created, Georgia Anne Muldrow is super talented, and Outkast "Atliens" changed my life. I have more favorite songs than favorite artist because artist aren't usually as consistent as you would like them to be.

Did you already produce for any artists?
Besides producing for myself I have produced for Danny Brown, Big Tone, Quelle, Crown Nation, Marvwon, Finale, almost Elzhi but none of my beats he recorded to made the cut for his album. I produced for a bunch of other people too but I don't have a long producer resume. It is probably because I do not try to give out beats or sell them anymore. I usually keep them to myself like Kanye West would do and create my own dope songs.

Any future plans? Will you come out a LP for example?
The future is looking promising. Although I have been making music all my life my career has just begun this year with the release of my mixtape "Just Thinking Out Loud". So I have a bunch of shows lined up for the summer, shooting some videos, working with some artist you all know and love. And I will definitely be producing, writing, and recording for my debut album.
